As Sanders and surrogates explore a 2020 presidential bid, more than a dozen former female and male staffers who worked on the 2016 campaign signed a letter requesting a meeting with Sanders and his leadership team "to discuss the issue of sexual violence and harassment on the 2016 campaign, for the objective of planning to mitigate the issue in the upcoming presidential cycle".
Kat Brezler, the other co-founder of the People for Bernie Sanders, said in a statement that part of coming together in support of a Sanders 2020 campaign would be to discuss best practices moving forward and to learn from past mistakes on campaigns.
He continued, "The allegations speak to unacceptable behavior that must not be tolerated in any campaign or workplace".
The campaign was celebrating the end of Sanders' improbable run for the nomination when Becker told the woman he wanted to have sex with her and made the reference to his "pole", the newspaper said. "You can't run for president of the United States unless you acknowledge that every campaign demands a safe work environment for every employee and volunteer", she added.
"Yes, I was a little bit busy running around the country trynna make the case", he said when asked if he had missed the harassment on his campaign.
Politico had previously reported "that a 20-something female staffer said she was forcibly kissed by a top Sanders adviser at a bar in Philadelphia on the final night of the Democratic National Convention".
Becker denied the allegations to Politico.
Former campaign staffers wrote a letter to the senator in December to request a meeting with him and his advisers about "the issue of sexual violence and harassment on the 2016 campaign" in order to "mitigate the issue in the upcoming presidential cycle".
Sanders again Thursday denied knowledge of the alleged harassment, but top officials from his campaign have acknowledged that the gender make-up of any future campaign would need to look sufficiently different to address systemic sexism.
