The Australian Open, the nation's biggest and popular tennis event, is running on a pair of tournaments, the combined prize pool of which comes to $500,000.
Additionally, a Duos tournament featuring "a further 100 personalities from sports, entertainment and the gaming world" will duke it out in order to win charitable donations to organisations in need.
Professional tennis is getting into the esports craze, as one of the sport's biggest events, the Australian Open, will feature a $500 thousand Fortnite: Battle Royale tournament called the 'Summer Smash'.
The Fortnite Summer Smash solos event will consist of three phases - registration, a qualifying stage and finals stage. The qualifying heats will happen on Saturday 26, with the top 20 players from each of the five heats going on to a six-match finals event on the following Sunday. The Australian Open organizers will also be providing all equipment for players participating in the tournament, who are not allowed to use their own peripherals.
"We're thrilled to have the opportunity to bring the fun of a competitive Fortnite event to fans and players in Australia", said Epic Games co-founder Mark Rein. Already confirmed for the Duos event are content creators Loserfruit, Lachlan, Muselk, Lazarbeam and MrFreshAsian.
At this time, the event is only open to residents of Australia and New Zealand aged 16 or older.
Registrations open on Wednesday, January 9 via the Aus Open website.
