Woods keen to be playing captain at Presidents Cup Agency

Tiger Woods poses with the Presidents Cup trophy

Tiger puts Bahamas over Aus Open

The 2019 Presidents Cup will be hosted by Royal Melbourne Golf Club and conclude on December 15.

Woods, in Melbourne for a promotional visit, said the talks later Thursday would focus on the options of the Americans playing his Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, coming to Melbourne the week prior for practice with sand-belt techniques, or playing the Australian Open as the lead-up event at The Australian in Sydney.

Tiger Woods learned the hard way two decades ago how important preparation was for the President's Cup success, and he is determined to leave nothing to chance when he captains the U.S.at next year's edition at Royal Melbourne. The flight from the islands to Australia is one he hopes many top Americans will make next year, although he admitted there are "some logistical things" to work out to ensure a smooth transition between the events, which are expected to play back-to-back. "We've got a few meetings scheduled in today, try to get a better plan going forward, so that we can get the best that we can at the Hero as well as getting everyone here from the Bahamas to this tournament rested, get them prepared and get them ready to play".

The 1998 event remains the only outright win the worldwide team has claimed.

"Quite frankly, we weren't prepared to play and we got smoked", Woods said of the 1998 tournament.

"Now fast forward to next year, I'll be a captain, so I'm going to have to defer a lot of information to my vice-captains and get a lot of their opinions and also my team, whether or not I can play and do both roles".

Only three-time major victor Hale Irwin has played the Cup as a captain when he performed dual roles in the inaugural 1994 event. If not, they'll stay competitive, stay sharp.

Woods has played the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne twice - in 1998 and 2011.

But 14-time Major victor Woods has declared he will accept the role of playing skipper - which has happened just once - if he is to earn automatic qualification for what will be a star-studded American team.

"After the TOUR Championship, we'll have our top eight guys, and hopefully I'll be part of the top eight".

"I had a lot of prep about being a vice-captain and being a player, and I was part of a lot of those conversations about who should be part of the team, all the group texts that we were trying to figure out", he said.

Only Hale Irwin has played the Presidents Cup as a captain when he performed dual roles for the U.S.in the inaugural 1994 event.

"Each individual team has their own uniqueness and their own character, and that's what's fun about being a part of these teams, that you're building relationships that you never thought you would have, and relationships that last a lifetime", Woods said. If not, then myself and my vice captains are going to have to figure out - as well as the other top eight players - who are the next four guys that will be best served to be part of this team, to come down here and compete and play against the Internationals.

"Normally over the course of time, a lot of golf courses get modernized, get lengthened, change different angles, add bunkers, whatever it may be, but they haven't done that at Royal [Melbourne]", Woods said.

"It really hasn't; it looks about the same", Woods said.
