Kelly, however, only joined as chief of staff in July a year ago. Numerous storms in which Kelly became embroiled were by his own making.
Trump nominated him for a second two-year term last year.
Kelly and Trump have grown tired of each other.
After a CNN report on Friday morning that Kelly could be stepping down in a matter of days, Trump did not pause long enough to take questions from reporters, though he teased he would make another big personnel announcement on Saturday at the Army-Navy game in Philadelphia. The lights were off in his West Wing office.
Kelly is the latest high-ranking White House official known to have given information for Mueller's probe.
The retired four-star general and former Homeland Security director tried to bring order to the White House, but he and the president are said to have grown tired of one other in recent weeks.
Washington has been abuzz with rumours about Kelly's job status at various moments during his 16-month tenure.
"Most of the dozens of other interviews have been with people who were associated with the Trump campaign, were part of the transition or served in the early part of the administration", the report said. He insulted Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida, using inaccurate information, later declaring he would "never" apologize.
But perhaps most damaging was his handling of the situation involving former staff secretary Rob Porter, who was accused by two of his ex-wives of abuse.
Kelly was reportedly questioned about the obstruction of justice arm of the special counsel's investigation, which CNN reported Thursday was first launched by former Deputy Director of the FBI Andrew McCabe shortly after his boss, James Comey, was fired.
