Ahead of the show's return next year, HBO has released the first official teaser for Game of Thrones season 8, culminating in a battle of ice and fire.

Plot details for the eighth season remain under wraps, however, the final six episodes will serve as a conclusion to the epic series. The network released a new teaser trailer today for the show's final season, one that doesn't contain any new footage, but just plays on the title of George R.R. Martin's novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, on which of course the show is based.

Game of Thrones will be followed by a prequel spin-off which is expected to premiere as early as 2020 and stars Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse (Poldark).

The preview, which debuted at the São Paulo Expo offshoot of Comic Con in Brazil, begins with ice overtaking the land of Westros, before freezing a wolf representing House Stark solid.

The new clip gets symbolic, showing ice consuming statues of a wolf and a dragon on the Painted Table at Dragonstone, while fire engulfs a lion, rushing to meet the incoming chill. "They've really done a tremendous job in servicing the drama and the characters and so forth, and there are many ups and downs and twists and turns all across the "Game of Thrones" society and the world they are", he added.

In the final season of Game of Thrones, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen have joined forces to defeat the White Walkers once and for all.
