At least 13 dead in California bar shooting

Sheriff John Dean recounted what Helus had told his wife, telling the LA Times: 'He said, "Hon, I got to go, I love you".

It is the latest mass killing in the United States, and comes less than two weeks after 11 people were killed in a shooting at a Jewish religious center.

Dean said Long was a veteran of the U.S. marine corps. He was found dead in the office of the Borderline, after reportedly having shot himself. "We know Cody's heart and he sacrificed his own life, to protect the ones around him".

The sheriff's department had several previous contacts with Long including a call to his home in April when deputies found him acting irate and irrationally.

A mental health specialist with the crisis team met with him and felt he might be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Sergeant Ron Helus is among the victims killed. Helus died early Thursday at a hospital.

In August, two people were killed and almost a dozen others were injured when gunfire erupted during a Madden tournament at the Good Luck Have Fun Game Bar inside Chicago Pizza at the Jacksonville Landing.

About ten other victims were wounded.

"Ask anyone on the (Coronado) island who knows this kid and they'll say nothing short of how great a guy he is", Sefa-Boakye said.

Long was identified by police on Thursday as the gunman who killed 12 people and injured more than a dozen more in a sudden spree of violence at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks.

"She loved kids. We had a lot of parents show up today to say, 'She made my child feel important and that they mattered", Rev Thornton said. I saw him, then I saw him fire his weapon one more time. "There's a fence right there so I said, 'Everyone get over the fence as quickly as you can.' And I followed them over". Whitler said then she heard "Get up, he's coming!" and people trampled on each other to get out.

Erika Sigman, 19, was another witness.

"She was the kind of girl that if you had friends, you'd want them to marry her", she said. He praised the slain officer - a close friend - as a hero: "He went in there to save people and paid the ultimate price".

For hours after the attack and into the early morning hours of Thursday, Housley's family was desperately seeking information about her.

He told reporters that his son - who had two younger brothers, aged eight and six - had been planning to join the military and was also looking forward to the arrival of a baby sister later this month.

Borderline, a Western-themed establishment known to regularly host country, salsa and swing dancing nights, was hosting a college country night on Wednesday evening.

"He said Helus was on the phone with his wife when he got the report of the shooting and he told her, "'Hey, I have to go. Other witnesses described people using bar stools to break windows and escape.

Dean said he has no doubt Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer who also was the first to respond "saved lives by going in there and engaging with the suspect". He shot a security guard, tossed smoke bombs into the bar and opened fire with a handgun equipped with a device that allowed it to hold more bullets.

Law enforcement agencies, firefighters and other first responders, along with several ambulances, additional units from the California Highway Patrol, Simi Valley and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, reached the spot soon after the shooting was reported. The bar is near the campus. The university invited the community to gather at the school's chapel.
