They join previous Netflix productions in Asia that include India's "Sacred Games", Japanese anime series "Devilman Crybaby, and Korean variety comedy "Busted". However, it's coming full circle for Pacific Rim, the anime-inspired Guillermo del Toro property which is returning to the medium from which it drew inspiration.
A series that will pop up on Netflix, as Deadline reports that the streaming platform is pushing forward with even more original anime productions. Within the 17 new Asian Originals announced, 5 of which are brand new anime titles.
After a successful season of live-action television, Netflix sci-fi hit Altered Carbon is getting the anime treatment.
Other new titles include: post-apocalyptic anime series "Cagaster of an Insect Cage" from Japanese studio Gonzo; Philippines-set alien imposter series "Trese", from Shanty Harmayn's Base Entertainment; survival adventure "The Stranded", from Thailand's GMM and H2L Media, executive produced by Ekachai Uekrongtham, Gary Levinsohn, Steven Sims, Billy Hines, and Christian Durso; and spooky Thai tale "Shimmers", by directors Wisit Sasanatieng ("Tears of the Black Tiger") and Sittisiri Mongkolsiri. The cyberpunk setting and themes of lost identity are well-suited to anime - the medium helped define the former.
The Pacific Rim anime series from Netflix will "expand upon the story of the first two live action movies and follow two siblings - an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister - who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents".
With just over $290 million earned worldwide from a $150 million budget, Pacific Rim's film aspirations are about as deceased as the remains of the Crimson Typhoon crew.
That leaves three other series: Cagaster of an Insect Sage, Yasuke, and Trese.
Based on the manga series by author Kacho Hashimoto the story is centered around a young couple that struggles to survive in a post-apocalyptic world in which the disease known as the "Cagaster" transforms humans into murderous insects.
With Japan ravaged by a war that saw magic and mechs used on the battlefield, a wandering ronin finds himself wielding a sword once again as he fights to protect a child who is being hunted by sinister forces. Created & Directed by LeSean Thomas (The Boondocks, Cannon Busters), who is also serving as executive producer. But of course, this set-up doesn't come without problems as she soon clashes with supernatural beings from the criminal underworld.
