Fossil gets active with Sport smartwatch

While there's still a noticeable lack of smartphone manufacturers working with Wear OS, Fossil is still churning out Wear OS watches left and right.

It's hard to take Google's Wear OS software platform seriously in the Apple-dominated smartwatch market when so many recent releases have come powered by an nearly three year-old processor.

The company says the 350 mAh unit, with the help of Wear 3100, will be able to eke out a day of life based on the "full smartwatch experience", which we assume includes some HR tracking and Global Positioning System. Not only is it the lightest watch Fossil's ever made, but thanks to its aluminum and nylon case, Fossil says that the Fossil Sport is the "lightest smartwatch to date". Additionally, the Fossil Sport also features a new battery-saving mode; enhanced ambient mode; and integrated heart rate, NFC and Global Positioning System capabilities.

According to Fossil, the watch will come in a 41mm and 43mm size options, with six colorways and a huge collection of interchangeable straps to choose from. The new guy has built-in Global Positioning System functionality in addition to heart rate tracking and NFC support for wrist payments, with the latter two features present on the Versa as well. It's also running the revamped Wear OS that just started rolling out in September. The recently announced Wear OS Spotify app will also, Fossil says, be pre-loaded onto the watch for use straight out of the box as will personal safety app Noonlight.

The Fossil Sport will retail for $255 and will be available at retail stores around the world starting November 12th.

I think Fossil is offering a pretty compelling package at this price point, especially considering the hardware and newer chipset.

We'll be posting our in-depth review of the device over the coming weeks, so be sure to check back to see if the Sport lives up to the billing.
