However, following a dismal start to the 2018-19 season, Jardim has been sacked with Monaco in the relegation zone after five defeats in their first nine games.

Monaco also progressed to the Champions League semi-finals in 2016-17 under Jardim, who built a vaunted squad which saw the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy and Tiemoue leave, with Thomas Lemar and Fabinho heading for the exit this summer.

But, after winning 3-1 at Nantes on the opening day of the season, Monaco failed to win any of their next eight league games and lost to Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in Champions League.

Monaco have officially sacked title-winning coach Leonardo Jardim, with reports suggesting Thierry Henry has been lined up as his replacement. "The entire club wish Leonardo and his coaching staff all the best for the next stage of their careers".

"I am grateful and proud to have been able to manage Monaco for over four years", Jardim said.

"We have won enjoyed great victories together and I will always keep those memories with me".

Monaco chief executive Vadim Vasilyev added: "I want to thank Leonardo with deepest respect for all the work he has done".

"Leonardo has established himself on the bench of AS Monaco as a reference in Europe and leaves behind a very positive balance sheet".

"His passage will remain as one of the most handsome pages in the history of the club".

France legend Thierry Henry is the leading candidate to replace the Portuguese tactician.

Henry held talks with Aston Villa this week about becoming their new manager, according to Sky sources, but they appointed Dean Smith on Wednesday.
