"José Mourinho told the players that Paul Pogba will not be the captain because he doesn't represent what a captain is and Manchester United is bigger than anyone", a Carrington source said, as per The Times.

The United boss is furious with Pogba's attitude but he gave a different take after the dramatic shoot-out.

"If Ed Woodward was going to doubt Jose Mourinho, the time to doubt him was at the point whereby he should have said I'm not giving you a new contract last January", Neville said on Sky Sports.

"But no fall-out. No problems at all".

"The person who made the decision to be second captain was also me".

Mourinho has rested a number of United stars for the Carabao Cup clash with Derby this evening.

Frank Lampard's Derby had 53 per cent of the possession against United and goals from Harry Wilson and Jack Marriott, to cancel out Juan Mata's opener, looked to have wrapped up the match in normal time.

"Harry Wilson does do that in training, he proved me wrong as I thought it was too far out", Lampard added. Marouane Fellaini came to United's rescue in the fifth minute of stoppage time with an equalizer.

Players from both teams emphatically scored the first 15 penalties but Phil Jones made it a night to forget for Mourinho when his effort was saved by Scott Carson.

"I'm shell shocked. What a performance", he said. "That's Old Trafford", Pogba told reporters. We are at home and we should play much better against Wolves.

"To have the personality to step up and take penalties and perform the way they did, I'm just a proud manager, they were great".

He is understood to have accused the £90m midfielder of believing he is bigger than the Old Trafford giants.

Fresh from playing a pivotal role in France's World Cup success, Pogba, who cost United a then world record £89 million ($116 million) to bring back to the club from Juventus in 2016, has started to deliver on his price tag this season. I don't enjoy seeing them not being competitive.

"I am trying to build a group to be successful and nights like this are incredible".
