Without my family I would not be the player I am today.

"He was my big inspiration and that team gave us belief that we could achieve something great in Russian Federation".

Marta won her sixth Federation Internationale de Football Association player of the year award, and her first since 2010, after leading Brazil to Copa America Femenina glory. The former Real Madrid "Galactico" clinched his third Champions League title in a row and fifth overall last season.

O'Neill selected Ronaldo in second with Liverpool's Mo Salah in third.

"He deserves it because he was the best player in the Club World Cup and the best player in the World Cup". He scored in their opening two matches and also set up one goal.

Modric won the Champions League with Real and then played a major role in Croatia's run to the World Cup final where they were beaten by France. "Hopefully we can be the same for next generations", said Modric. "I'm very proud of all the good things I've achieved this year, and it will be remembered for a long time for sure".

The FIFPro team of the year was also announced at the FIFA Best ceremony, wherein the goalkeeper of the team was Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois. The event took place in London on Monday evening.

"These things were not a burden, they only further motivated me", Modric said at the World Cup.

"I have to thank everyone who for voted me".

With no Cristiano in London, the bets are on Luka Modric having won the Champions League with Real Madrid and reached the World Cup final with Croatia, only to be beaten despite his spectacular performance.

His sublime goal against Everton that saw him dribble the entire Toffees team got the nod ahead of the over head kicks from Ronaldo and Bale. He has adjudged the best player at the tournament in Russian Federation. It is for my Real Madrid team-mates, the Croatia national team and all my coaches. Without my coaches, I would not have won this.

Modric scored twice and also netted in penalty shootout wins over Denmark and Russian Federation, but it was his playmaking ability that caught the eye in winning the Golden Ball for the best player at the World Cup.

This is the third edition of the Best Fifa Football Awards, set up after Fifa ended its association with the Ballon d'Or award.
