Renowned filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi died on Sunday after suffering from a chronic kidney disease and liver failure.
Filmmaker Hansal Mehta, who had worked with the Kalpana Lajmi on her film Darmiyaan wrote: "Just heard about Kalpana Lajmi passing away". She was often often hailed as one of the forerunners of parallel cinema. According to reports, she breathed her last at 4.30 am.
Kalpana was the partner of Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika's till his death in 2011. She went on to work as an assistant costume designer in Benegal's "Bhumika: The Role" (1977), starring Smita Patil, Amol Palekar and Naseeruddin Shah, among others.
Lajmi made her directorial debut with the documentary, "D.G".
Kalpana Lajmi was known for directing critically movies acclaimed movies like Rudaali, Darmiyaan: In Between and Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence.
"Rudaali" (1993) featuring Dimple Kapadia in the lead was India's official entry for Best Foreign Language film at the 66th Academy Awards. RIP my darling Kalpana. She was diagnosed with kidney cancer last year.Her last directed film was Chingari, which featured Sushmita Sen and Mithun Chakraborty. "I will miss her strong energetic voice, her indefatigable drive to create, her laughter that was always so full of real joy and her wonderful sense of humour".
