The US National Hurricane Centre in its 8 a.m. tropical storm update reported Tropical Storm Isaac's centre was 25 miles east of Dominica and 80 miles southeast of Guadeloupe. "Maximum sustained winds remain near 90 miles per hour (150 km/h) with higher gusts".
The poorly organized, 45-mph storm is not expected to strengthen but should maintain its tropical storm strength for the next few days.
A Tropical Storm Watch which had been issued for St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Barbuda and Antigua was also expected to be discontinued by Thursday evening.
"At this time, Tropical Storm Isaac is not considered an imminent threat to the Cayman Islands but that could change", said Tara Rivers, Minister responsible for HMCI.
And the storm is still expected to bring catastrophic winds, rain, storm surges and flooding, the National Hurricane Center briefing said.
"This storm will bring destruction to North Carolina", Gov. Roy Cooper said Thursday morning. The winds of Isaac are not expected to affect the Virgin Islands.
Sustained winds on Tuesday afternoon approached 105 miles per hour, making it a very strong Category 2 storm, though it was expected to gradually weaken over cooler waters. "These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions".
Some coastal flooding is possible in areas of onshore winds.
"Just because we have a landfall to the south doesn't mean your out of the woods because the wind around this storm is huge", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said Wednesday morning. "There will be some rain but at the moment it doesn't look as though that's going to be the issue". "Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions", the hurricane center briefing said. While early on Wednesday the odds of it forming dropped, by afternoon forecasters had again increased the chance to 70 percent over two days. A hurricane hunter plane is scheduled to investigate the system Thursday.
