Bug squashed! Volkswagen confirms death of the Beetle… Volkswagen has announced that Beetle production will cease in July 2019

The 2019 VW Beetle Final Edition the automaker announced Thursday signals the end of the line for the iconic coupe and convertible's second reboot.

"The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over almost seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle's many devoted fans", Volkswagen's President and CEO, Hinrich Woebcken said in the announcement Thursday.

"I would say 'never say never,"' VW of America chief executive Hinrich Woebcken said in a statement.

"The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over almost seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle's many devoted fans", said Woebcken. Although in some European markets it has been discontinued, and in others like Germany it's only available to order in cabriolet form, VW USA was saying it had no plans to discontinue the model in the US at that time.

The cars will include nods to earlier versions and be priced at Dollars 23,045 and up, the company said. The first model of the vehicle was commissioned from Ferdinand Porsche by Adolf Hitler, who asked for a cheap "people's car" that could carry a family of five in an age when few Germans could afford motor transport.

Last year VW sold only 8627, according to Autodata Corp.

Volkswagen revived the model in 1998, introducing a redesigned modern "New Beetle" which mainly attracted female buyers. The car's iconic design limits what the company can do with it while still enticing Beetle lovers to the vehicle.

Beetle sales fell 31 per cent in the eight months ended August 31 from the same period a year earlier.

Passenger auto sales have been plunging in the U.S.in recent years as American preferences shift to larger vehicles.

USA sales rose fivefold to more than 29,000 in the first year, rising to just over 46,000 in 2013, but tailed off after that.

The Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition from L.A is finished in a new Aquarius Blue colour along with the option of a hard roof in black colour or a soft top in black colour.

The company, having already paid out costly government settlements, is fighting billions of dollars in additional claims lodged by shareholders who saw their stock plummet in value.
