So when Rhode Island resident Mary Halsey flawlessly performed it in a video that went viral over the summer - and Missy Elliott herself saw the impressive cover rendition - Elliott was quick to laud her "funky white sister", sharing the video on Twitter along with her fervent praise.
Last month, Missy reacted to a video of her "Funky White Sister" performing her own version of "Work It", complete with sound effects and everything.
"I learned; and I read the words; and I studied it and the reaction that I got was so positive that it became my go-to song", she said.
"The song had come out in 2002 and it was really popular", she said. "Everybody wants to hear it".
Halsey hit the stage for her signature performance only to be surprised by Elliott, who walked out to join her. During the interview, she said of one day meeting Elliott, "I see it in my future". Ellen DeGeneres has a reputation for bringing viral sensations onto her show and connecting them with celebrities. Halsey seems to have the wind knocked out of her for a few seconds before performing a duet with Elliott. Missy revealed that the mumbled lyrics right after the line, "I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it", are actually that same phrase - only reversed.
In the end, not only did Missy give Mary a signed T-shirt, but Ellen also gave her a jacket that had the words "Missy's Funky White Sister" emblazoned on the back.
