The official autopsy for Jean, whose funeral was held Thursday, will determine the details into his killing.

The outraged family of a man gunned down inside his own home by an off-duty officer accused cops Thursday of smearing the victim, after a police affidavit was released showing officers searched his apartment and found marijuana. "God gave me an angel", Allison Jean said at a prayer vigil last weekend.

Guyger has been charged with manslaughter, but some demonstrators want her charged with murder.

Guyger was arrested for manslaughter on Sunday evening and released about an hour later on a $300,000 bond.

"Botham Shem Jean was not a silhouette", Dane Felicien, a family friend, said at Thursday's funeral at the Greenville Avenue Church of Christ, in the Dallas suburb of Richardson.

Felicien received a standing ovation from the crowd when he said, "We as Americans, as humans must turn away from the incivility that has rotted away at our interactions".

Scattered among the group of well-wishers was Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, Bishop T.D. Jakes and Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall.

In an article published in the January 2016 edition of Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment, researchers Calvin John Smiley, a sociology professor at Hunter College of City University, and David Fakunle, now a postdoctoral research fellow at Morgan State University, described several high-profile cases in which information such as a victim's criminal history, neighborhood or even physique was used to "posthumously criminalize" him.
