The PTI chief stated that there could be political differences between the two countries, however, the desire to establish peace existed on both sides of the border. It was the first time India had carried out nuclear tests since 1974.

But in India he was hailed as a hero, and it helped him bolster his image as a leader who was serious about national security and not afraid of global pressure.

Mr Vajpayee was one of the most popular leaders of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"He was a charismatic politician who took pride in India and took everyone along".

Pakistan's prime minister-in-waiting Imran Khan remembered Vajpayee as a "tall personality of the subcontinent", news agency ANI quoted him as saying.

Nepal's Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli extended condolences, and said that in Vajpayee's death, Nepal had lost a "true friend and well-wisher".

"The government and people of Pakistan extend their heartfelt condolences to his family and to the government and people of India", it added.

In many ways Vajpayee was a complicated figure, a leader of the moderate wing of India's often-strident Hindu nationalist movement and a lifelong poet who oversaw India's growth into a strutting regional economic power.

Mr. Karzai sat through the funeral alongside Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kiriella and met a cross section of dignitaries in attendance. In a statement, the French government also condoled Vajpayee's demise.

According to Indian media, the final procession of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will take place on Friday in the national capital, Delhi at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal at 4pm. He was one of the most inspiring world leaders of our times.

"The demise of such a great leader is a great loss not only to India but also to Japan and other parts of Asia as well as the entire global community. The upswing in India-Japan relations was only possible by the initiatives started by Prime Minister Vajpayee", Hiramatsu said.
