Two groups of tourists brawl over selfie spot at Rome's Trevi Fountain

Two women ended up in a hair-pulling fight on the edges of Italy's famous Trevi Fountain after the pair wanted to take a selfie in the same spot.

The fight broke out on Wednesday between a 19-year-old Dutch teen and a 44-year-old American woman.

The fight escalated, with relatives of both woman joining in.

According to the Guardian, the fight happened at a time of day when the light from the sun makes the fountain a flawless backdrop.

They had an exchange of words before a physical fight began, and their family members joined in.

According to the La Repubblica newspaper, there were eight people involved in the fight before the police intervened.

Two police officers were called at first but a truce between the family members only lasted a few minutes before they started fighting again.

Luckily the tourists involved in the brawl were only bruised, but were reportedly charged over violence. It has appeared in several notable films, including La Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday.

The Trevi Fountain, which was designed by architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, attracts thousands of visitors each year.
