Police in Fredericton say at least four people have been killed in a shooting just outside the downtown core early Friday, and they're urging the public to stay inside and lock their doors.
The incident in the capital of the Canadian province New Brunswick is still ongoing.
It happened in the Brookside Drive area where there are a number of shops and houses.
The Fredericton Firefighters Association was asking people on Facebook not to use social media to report on police locations.
At the time, the incident was one of the worst of its kind in Canada, where gun laws are stricter than they are in the United States and deadly attacks on police are rare.
Cops added: "At this time, we can confirm multiple fatalities. More information will be available when we can confirm". The police said in a tweet that there were "at least four people killed", but provided few other details other than to say the incident was ongoing.
A worker at a nearby Tim Horton's coffee and doughnut shop revealed staff had locked the doors and are keping customrs insid.
