Melania Trump's parents become USA citizens

Melania Trump's parents get US citizenship

Melania Trump’s parents sworn in as U.S. citizens

Melania Trump became a USA citizen in 2006, after entering the U.S. on a coveted Einstein visa for people of "extraordinary ability" in 2001 when she was working as a model.

Viktor, right, and Amalija Knavs arrive to take the oath of citizenship with their attorney Michael Wildes in New York, Thursday, August 9. Viktor was a auto dealer.

The couple's lawyer said they had "travailed a wonderful journey".

The family lawyer confirms the Slovenian couple took the citizenship oath in New York City.

Currently, the majority of green card recipients receive them via family sponsorship.

"This golden experiment, these doors that are in America, remain hinged open to attractive people as they have today", Wildes said after the ceremony. The first lady herself was granted citizenship in 2006. She said the first lady's parents "are not part of the administration and deserve privacy". As CNN notes, critics have pointed out that President Trump wants to end that type of family-based migration. He also called for eliminating a visa lottery program for people from countries under-represented in the U.S.

Trump has taken a hardline on immigration policy, criticizing so-called main migration that allows naturalized United States citizens to sponsor close relatives for permanent residency.

Experts estimate those measures would cut legal immigration into the US almost in half.

The idea that family-based immigration could be labeled as "dirty" might have a lot to do with the Knavs' son-in-law. The CBC's Matt Kwong tells us how the Canadian and U.S. immigration system differ in terms of TYPE and numbers.

The Knavses' citizenship ceremony was kept hush-hush at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building.

The couple met in Sevnica, Slovenia in 1966, and Melania was born in the same town.

A source familiar with the situation told Yahoo News that the Knavses received their green cards before Trump was elected and that they were sponsored by their daughter. They married in 2005.

There has been speculation that the President Donald Trump's in-laws may have benefited from the "chain migration" process that he has claimed endangers Americans and vowed to restrict.

Melania Trump became a US citizen in 2006 after marrying Trump the year before.
