Idris Elba has been the fan favourite to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond for years

(Current star Daniel Craig is 50.) This January, Elba suggested the Bond role could one day be played by a woman. During the conversation, Broccoli reportedly told Fuqua that "it is time" for a non-white actor to take the lead role, that she's was certain it would "happen eventually", and that Elba was the front-runner.

In the correspondence, which was released during the massive Sony hack that year, the then-studio co-chair Amy Pascal said to a colleague: 'Idris should be the next Bond'.

Idris Elba may be the next man to play James Bond, as revealed by famed director, Antoine Fuqua.

A report in British tabloid The Daily Star suggests actor Idris Elba, who played business-minded drug kingpin Bell in the acclaimed HBO drama The Wire, could be next in line to play James Bond. However, given the length of time it took the actor to be confirmed in the role and the fact that he has played Bond for well over a decade now, it seems unlikely that he will be back for a sixth film. And now, it appears a turn as James Bond is in Elba's future.

"Idris could do it if he was in shape", the director teased. You need a guy with a physically strong presence.

There has been a bonafide grassroots movement to get Elba a role as Bond. He's returning as Bond in the as-yet untitled 25th film in the series, set to begin filming late in 2018.

'We will begin shooting Bond 25 at Pinewood Studios in December with our partners at MGM and thrilled that Universal will be our global distributor.
