That 1964.5 Mustang VIN 001 was a Wimbledon White convertible with a 3-speed automatic and a 164hp V8 engine under the hood. Mustangs have also been built in San Jose, California; and Metuchen, New Jersey.

It was way back in 1964 that the first series production Mustang - the pioneer of the muscle vehicle genre - rolled out of Ford's plant in Dearborn, Michigan.

To mark the occasion, Ford said on Wednesday that it invited 60 Mustang owners representing each generation of the ponycar to celebrate the 10 millionth vehicle at its Flat Rock, Michigan, assembly plant. The first serialized Mustang off the line also carried a V8, but its transmission had half the forward speeds and just 164 horsepower.

Ford hailed the milestone with employee celebrations at its Dearborn headquarters and Flat Rock factory, including flyovers from three WWII-era P-51 Mustang fighter planes and a parade of rare, significant and famous Mustangs - including the original Bullitt film auto.

"Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favourite around the world", Jim Farley, Ford's president of global markets, said in a news release. The automaker has gathered one Mustang from every model year, and they're parading from Ford's headquarters in Dearborn to the Flat Rock Assembly Plant where the Mustang is now built.

The latest Ford Mustang offers an extensive array of technology and performance, the pinnacles of modern engineering showcased with Ford's 2019 Mustang Bullitt. Here's to the next 10 million! The Mustang is a hugely important auto for Ford and is one of only two Ford cars that are continuing production.
