The Insatiable cast also includes Alyssa Milano (Charmed) as Bob's wife Coralee and Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs) as Bob's pageant-dad nemesis Barnum. For years, Patty (Debby Ryan) has been bullied, ignored, and underestimated by those around her because of her weight. "I hope that clears it up". But after having her jaw wired shut for a summer, she returns to school thinner and more conventionally attractive.
Since the trailer was unveiled Thursday, critics have expressed their concerns about the message of the show saying it was encouraging people to stop eating to become 'skinny and desirable'.
But Franchesca Ramsey of MTV's "Decoded" responded, "the highlighted piece seems to suggest the show is meant to comment on how society is cruel to fat ppl which.we already know. but you're participating in that cruelty bc you're thin & boiling down a characters happiness & success to their being thin.so yea, people are upset".
More than 11,000 people have signed it, as of Friday afternoon.
Debby has not directly released a statement about her new role as Patty since the backlash of the trailer. The actress linked to an article about the show in Teen Vogue that talks about the nuances of the series. "If someone's treatment of you is rooted in how your body looks, that says a lot about them, not you", a part of the highlighted reads. But it remains unclear if they anticipated this level of backlash. In the past, the streaming network was under attack for it's show 13 Reasons Why and how it portrayed issues relating to suicide and bullying.
But it's not all smooth sailing for Ryan's "Fatty Patty" in the Insatiable trailer, nor is this series not without its share of controversy.
