Jack Dorsey, chief executive officer and co-founder, said in a tweet on Thursday that he lost 200 000 followers, bringing his total down to 4 million, after Twitter made good on its pledge to remove suspicious accounts. As a result, Twitter accounts with a large number of followers lost a significant amount of users, which, based on the estimates of social media data firm Keyhole, top 100 accounts have lost about 2 percent of their followers.

Removing locked accounts from follower counts won't impact Twitter's monthly or daily active user metrics, the company said on Wednesday.

Kenyatta and Ruto lost 16,098 and 7,465 followers respectively as at 2:30 pm on Friday when Capital FM News last checked the number of followers they had on Twitter.

Twitter, in a blog, stated that it would suspend private accounts in a bid to curb fake news by limiting fake users: "Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate".

You can see it here. "In these situations, we reach out to the owners of the accounts and unless they validate the account and reset their passwords, we keep them locked with no ability to log in", Twitter announced on Wednesday.

Twitter launched a campaign to weed out fake followers as part of its "ongoing and global effort to build trust and encourage healthy conversation on Twitter".

According to social media analytics service Socialblade, the nine biggest Twitter accounts - Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Barack Obama, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Ellen Degeneres, Christiano Ronaldo and YouTube - all saw drops of more than 2 million followers each.

The drop in the follower count, however, has nothing to do with popularity of the Modi government.

Well, it is now happening and people have started noticing the drop in follower accounts. The politicians now have 101 million and 53.1 million followers, respectively. He added in another tweet, "Look, if they're genuinely fake or dead accounts, I have no problem with it.But how do we know?"

'@MisterseunPR' said: "Just lost over a thousand followers".
