Doctors put Bacon into a medically induced coma after he failed to respond to treatment and his condition worsened, the Sun reported.

The 42-year-old former "Blue Peter", "The Big Breakfast" and "Top of the Pops" presenter, who has been working in America in recent years, took ill on a flight to Britain from the United States last week and it's revealed he is suffering from pneumonia.

The former Blue Peter and BBC Radio 5 Live presenter had been well enough to post photos of himself on social media.

Richard was being treated for pneumonia before his condition took a turn for the worse and had to be put into a medically induced coma, a source told the newspaper.

MailOnline has approached Richard Bacon's representatives for further comment.

"The doctors have said that he is very distressed and confused after being in a coma for a week, which you can understand, and that we need to keep talking to him and reminding him of where he is", she continued.

This is an extremely worrying time for everyone who loves him. "They are beside themselves with worry".

"F*** all the ideology driven politicians who've messed up America's healthcare system".

Last Thursday, the former Blue Peter presenter updated his 1.47 million Twitter followers about his health, revealing he is in hospital. "Viva the NHS. Happy 70th", he captioned the snap which showed him in a hospital bed. "Although I thought that was for people in their 80s, I'll be here a few days".

But Richard admitted he was surprised to have been diagnosed with the inflammatory condition of the lung, because he has always associated it with older people.

"But across two lungs".
