Miller himself believes Beal is not only a legitimate prospect but perhaps the best supplemental draft talent to come along in several years. Battle has bounced around from the Rams to the Chiefs to the Seahawks Fbut has yet to see action in a regular-season game. "Both are in the supplemental draft because of academic ineligibility, which is a flag in and of itself".
From a production standpoint, Beal did a good job in the past two seasons making plays on the ball. To put it simply, these draft selections are rare.
The order for the supplemental draft is determined by a unique process. That familiarity helped the Redskins in deciding whether or not to draft a player who was declared academically ineligible for his redshirt senior season. But, some character issues pushed him a bit further down in the Supplemental Draft. The Giants took former Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal in Round 3 before Washington tapped Virginia Tech corner Adonis Alexander in the sixth round. The Bucs grabbed him for a third-round pick. The other three players who were eligible - Mississippi State S Brandon Bryant, Grand Valley State RB Marty Carter and Oregon State LB Bright Ugwoegbu - went undrafted and were rendered free agents and immediately able to sign with any interested National Football League team.
The draft order is interesting. The downside is the cost - teams that use a pick in the Supplemental Draft forfeit their pick in the matching round in next year's regular draft. A year earlier, quarterback Terrelle Pryor was taken in the third round by the Oakland Raiders.
The last exciting player selected in a supplemental draft was Josh Gordon, who was picked by the Cleveland Browns with a second-round selection in 2012. This year is different; there's three. The draft will go through 7 rounds, with teams allowed to blindly submit a pick each round.
In 2017, Beal started all 11 games in which he played and had 26 tackles, a career-high 12 pass breakups, and both of his interceptions. It's a risk to spend a second-round pick in the supplemental draft. He joined Western Michigan in 2015 as a wide receiver and made the switch the following year to cornerback, so he has only played at corner for two seasons at the collegiate level.
Instead, the New York Giants placed a third-round bid on Beal, one pick ahead of the Cleveland Browns, who were also rumored to have interest in Beal.
Sam Beal, the long, athletic MAC corner has been discussed as possibly going for as much as a second round pick with the Browns as one of the potential bidders. The risk with Beal is that he ran into academic issues in college that forced him to declare for the draft. He chose to return to school, but at the start of spring practice he was suspended indefinitely, and later declared for the Supplemental Draft. He is a consistent tackler who likely will have a role - or at least an opportunity for a role - on special teams in the NFL.
