According to Miami Beach Police Department Jonathan Crenshaw, who is a native of Florida, stabbed 22-year-old Cesar Coronado twice with the scissors before running away from the crime scene.

Crenshaw was booked on a charge of aggravated battery.

A man vacationing in South Beach was stabbed just after midnight Tuesday by a man with no arms.

Neither men dispute that Coronado was stabbed, but Crenshaw said he was attacked first, according to the arrest report.

Mr Crenshaw told police he acted in self defense.

Crenshaw said he was lying down when Coronado approached and punched him, police added.

Crenshaw's arrest record dates to 2008 and lists arrests for disorderly intoxication, vandalism, and battery on police officers, firefighters and city code inspectors.

It noted that Crenshaw is a popular fixture in the area and is known for painting canvases along a trendy spot in the neighbourhood of South Beach in the city of Miami Beach.

The victim was found by the Police lying on the ground, bleeding from his left arm and was then taken to the Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Coronado told investigators that he and his girlfriend, Cindy Barrientos, 22, and also of Chicago, stopped to ask Crenshaw for directions.

Crenshaw has remained tight-lipped on why he has no arms, but claimed to one reporter that his mother had fed him rat poison as a child.
