Apple is getting the party started for the App Store's 10th anniversary

First generation iPhone with the first iOS App Store featured on the screen

As App Store turns 10, Apple drops heavy hints of AR future

When the iPhone first launched in 2007, there was no App Store.

According to Google's release notes, no other new features were included in the update.

With the growing smartphone user base, the number of app downloads has seen a steep rise as well. "We could not be more proud of what developers have created and what the next 10 years have in store".

Today is the 10 anniversary of the Apple App Store, one of the strongest, most profitable platforms that has propelled Apple to become a monopoly.

And despite the fact that Android smartphones vastly outnumber iPhones, it is estimated that 77% of that revenue came from Apple's App Store. Over 28,000 iOS apps now offer subscriptions, which are up 95 per cent from previous year.

In addition the post lauds the App Store's pivotal role in making gaming mainstream, changing the way people pay for software and services (hello, in-app purchases), and opening up more accessible doors to education, creativity, entertainment, AR, and wellness.

"We are very happy that we are able to deliver Super Mario Run, a new Super Mario experience that could be played with just one hand on iPhone, to hundreds of millions of consumers because of the App Store", noted Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow, Nintendo.

Android provides clearer guidelines, more documentation, and allows more flexibility in terms of design. Apple says that as of June, it has paid out over $100 billion to app developers from App Store sales. For one, Apple talks about how developers have adopted the platform for their respective apps and games.

Before the App Store came around, mobile gaming was stuck in its nascency for what seemed like forever. Even if you don't have an Apple device, for using certain services like Apple Services, you will need to have an Apple ID. It also appears that more than 500 doctors and medical researchers have used Apple's ResearchKit and CareKit software tools for clinical studies involving 3 million participants on conditions ranging from autism and Parkinson's disease, etc.

With smartphone sales losing steam, Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) long-term performance puts increased reliance on its Services division, led by revenue from the App Store. This day is important for three groups - Apple (of course), but more importantly, consumers and developers.

Starting in 2013, Apple has awarded scholarships to promising young students, giving them a pass to attend the conference along with a year-long membership of the Apple Developer Program. The Today tab, which has Stories around app developers, have been read by more than 1 million people.
