Klopp rallies behind Karius after pre-season blunder

Loris Karius

GETTY Loris Karius is still Liverpool's No1 heading into the new season

Jürgen Klopp defended Loris Karius' actions after he made another blunder in goal in a pre-season friendly against Tranmere Rovers.

Liverpool held on to win 3-2 at Prenton Park, but still...

Karius failed to deal with a free-kick from Oliver Norburn and dropped the ball in the path of Jonny Smith, who scored for Tranmere.

'Two brilliant footballers make mistakes but we only talk about one.

Liverpool emerged as 3-2 victors but in his second appearance since the Champions League final - when his two mistakes cost Jurgen Klopp's side - Karius made a large error.

Klopp said that Karius will be heavily scrutinised by the media and fans until he can string together some consistent performances for the club but that the media can help by stop asking about his obvious mistakes.

While senior figures like Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi have to convince Klopp that they are better value than pursuing a forward in the transfer market.

"You [the media] can all stop it immediately - promise?" You never ask again, that would be one little step.

But after Karius was introduced at the interval he was beaten twice as the hosts battled back into the game, the German goalkeeper at fault for the first of their goals. I've seen this situation 500 times at least in my life - bam, against the chest and the ball is going down. Our job is to support Loris, that's our part of the deal. "I would say the second one but we don't talk about that". None of the three, it should be said, have convinced that they can be Liverpool's goalkeeper for the long term.

"The boys, we need them".
