I've played with Luka [Modric] and for me he is one of the best midfielders in the world by far. Maybe we thought they had everything under control but no, it is not that simple. They turned in their best team performance at this World Cup in the quarters, and there was loads to enjoy right across the park.

England manager Gareth Southgate on a potential World Cup win: "We've talked, touched briefly, certainly, on the team which won". We've shown belief and I think that's what is going to get us over the line in this game'. So to be here now, leading this team out, I'm so proud.

After some well-earned downtime following the battling win over Sweden to secure a place in the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 28 years, it was back to work for Gareth Southgate's squad in Repino.

But it's more than just England's crossing ability. "They've gone to two extra-times, and if you have to go to extra-time against Russian Federation".
