Chicago gun protesters close part of major interstate near downtown

An agreement previously reached Thursday had granted limited access to the Dan Ryan Expressway, but on Saturday, the Chicago Police Department later gave an order to shut down the expressway for crowd and traffic safety. State Police Director Leo Schmitz earlier this week said he "could not condone this reckless action", and urged Pfleger to reconsider the route. At around noon, some of the protesters began making their way off the Dan Ryan at 67th Street.

Pfleger said there was no deal made to stay on the shoulder, and anyone who said so is a liar.

More than a half hour later, the protesters won.

According to the same database, 501 of the 578 people killed in the city over the past 365 days were shot to death. "I have students calling me while they're being shot at", said Mandy Tovar.

Protesters planning to shut down a major Chicago interstate said they're trying to pressure public officials to address the gun violence that's claimed hundreds of lives in some of the city's poorest neighborhoods.

He added: "Because we've dealt with [protests] so much as an organization, we understand that sometimes it has to be a game-time decision in terms of what you do and how you do it because you can make the best plans that you want to, and things will go a little differently".

"At the end of the day, they're marching against violence". The south and west sides of the city, he said, faced "growing desperation" because they need jobs, education, infrastructure and justice. This was to get their attention.

Chicago police said the city saw 252 homicides and 1,100 shootings in the first six months of this year, a decrease from the same period last year. This decision was made due to the heightened risks posed by anticipated actions which were recently disclosed to us. Step two is now meet with our young people and tell us how you're going to answer for resources, for jobs, for affordable housing, for good schools, to help those coming back from incarceration.

"When people keep ignoring you, you take it up a notch", Pfleger said.

And Pfleger, who had the support of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, didn't hold back on how he feels about the state's response.

Before the protest, law enforcement were divided in how they would respond to demonstrators. There was no agreement. "We came out here to shut it down".

"This is unacceptable", Rauner posted on Twitter.

Among Saturday's protesters were students from Parkland, Florida. "This is about the violence in the city of Chicago".
