Sessions announced the policy that separates all families and detains immigrant children at the US-Mexico border in May as a deterrence measure, saying, "If you don't want your child to be separated, then don't bring them across the border illegally".
"If we are to live the values we proclaim we can not let President Trump and Attorney General Sessions continue to break up families and separate children from their parents", said Attorney General Herring.
"Traumatizing children by separating them from their parents as a deterrent for adult conduct is, in our view, sufficient reason to halt your policy", they wrote, adding that the legal work required to prosecute misdemeanor illegal entry cases takes away from more significant offenses like terror-related plots, corruption and human and drug trafficking.
Dozens of former USA attorneys, appointed under Democratic and Republican administrations, also pressed Sessions in a separate letter Tuesday to end the practice, calling it a "radical departure" from previous DOJ policy.
The group of former US attorneys not only condemned the policy pushed by Sessions and President Donald Trump, but also questioned the wisdom of devoting limited federal resources to prosecuting every illegal entry case.
