The iconic cartoon originally aired on the network from 1997 to 2001.
Instead of bringing back old series on MTV itself, its new production company MTV Studios will try to sell reboots of old properties to streaming services or other cable networks.
The new Daria series, officially titled Daria & Jodie, reinvents the Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn-created original through the eyes of the sardonic Daria Morgendorffer and her close friend Jodie Landon. Viewers will watch "these two smart young women take on the world, with their signature satirical voice while deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender and race".
The new Daria series is set to be written by Grace Edwards, who has worked on shows like Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt and Inside Amy Schumer.
Just like the 1990s original, the new Aeon Flux centers on its titular "badass heroine assassin" Aeon Flux as she partners with a crew of biohacking rebels as they fight to save humanity. The show is also said to, "strip away the polarization and cold anonymity of social media, the din of the 24-hour news cycle, and the facades of the instafamous culture", following seven strangers who, "stop being polite and start being real". This new series will seemingly follow the same format, which will bring together, "talented young underdogs with experts for face to face coaching for total life, real life reinventions".
There's now no word on when we can expect Daria & Jodie to grace our screens but in the meantime, get schooled on sarcasm via the entire back catalogue of Daria on Stan. That means they could be coming to a streamer near you.
Daria was on before reboots became A Thing - even Beavis and Butt-Head got one - but I'd bet my Mystik Spiral album that Daria would hate them.
