Analysis: Why wit and wisdom are the most likely tactics from Kim Jong Un’s playbook

Before now, TV stations and newspapers in Pyongyang have only put out their first reports after events have finished - but by North Korea's standards, the announcement that Mr Kim was in Singapore came much earlier than usual.

Reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong Un went on an evening tour of Singapore on Monday, posing with city-state officials at a tropical garden before visiting an infinity pool atop a landmark waterfront hotel, to the surprise of guests. The focus is on nuclear weapons, and the young autocrat's worldwide standing is likely to be boosted regardless of the outcome. And Secretary of State Mike Pompeo briefed reporters today.

Just hours before Donald Trump was scheduled to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore, the president was drawn back to Twitter where he took aim (albeit with poor spelling) at domestic critics.

She is Kim Jong Un's younger sister and is thought to be in her late 20s or early 30s.

US presidents have always faced a predicament in balancing national security and geopolitical priorities with democratic values. Carrying with them hopes to end seven decades of hostility and the threat of a nuclear confrontation, the meeting between the two firebrand leaders will be watched closely by people across the world.

At the same time, he's taken a confrontational path toward Western allies on issues like trade, climate and the Iran nuclear deal.

Trump then placed his hand on Kim's back as they exchanged small talk with their two translators by their side.

Kim, meanwhile, will be granted a measure of validation from Washington that eluded his father and grandfather. In March, Minister of State for External Affairs General V K Singh paid a two-day visit to North Korea, the first ministerial visit from India to North Korea in almost two decades.

After meeting privately and with aides, Trump and Kim moved into the luncheon at a long flower-bedecked table. -North Korea summit aimed at denuclearizing the Korean peninsula.

The eccentric former reality television star is one of the few westerners to have spent time with Kim during multiple visits to Pyongyang and the two struck up an unlikely friendship over their shared love of basketball. She is the counterpart to Sung Kim in the USA, who has been negotiating at the working level.

It's not clear what the U.S. side has been able to extract from the North Koreans in terms of their willingness to get rid of their nuclear weapons or allow inspectors into the country to catalogue the scale of their program.

Joseph Yun, former US envoy for North Korea policy, alluded to that when he told a Senate hearing last week that there's a risk of "overloading the agenda" for the summit. The meeting is meant to be "start of a relationship", the official said, and there could be more to come between both sides if things go well.

But whether North Korea is willing to do that is a big, open question right now.

North Korea then resumed nuclear development and expelled worldwide inspectors in 2009.

A peace treaty ending the Korean War, complete denuclearisation of North Korea or will it be just an elaborate get-to-know-you session?

For Trump, achieving a momentous foreign policy success would cement his place in history, and give his presidency a boost just months ahead of congressional mid-term elections.

On Monday morning, the KCNA and the Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the North's ruling party, gave extensive reports on Kim's departure for Singapore and his meetings with Singaporean officials, including its Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
