Western New York was placed under a severe thunderstorm watch by the Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service just after 4 p.m.
Peel is one of many regions in southern and eastern Ontario under severe thunderstorm watch, issued by Environment Canada.
The service says that the thunderstorms could develop this afternoon as a cold front moves through the area. The storm has the potential to bring high and possibly damaging wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/hr.
The weather agency said meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm, capable of producing very strong wind gusts, nickle-sized hail and heavy rain. "Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year".
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that anyone outdoors take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
