A Memphis woman allegedly placed her two grandchildren kennels and drove them around for at least 40 minutes.
Leimome Cheeks 62, was arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment. Court records show an arraignment scheduled for Monday has been continued until July 9, when she will tell a judge if she has hired a lawyer of if the court will need to appoint one.
According to neighbors, Cheeks just bought two German Shepherd puppies, which is why the kennels are in the back of her truck.
This past Saturday, a witness filmed Leimome Cheeks, 62, as she let her grandchildren out of the auto in the 3700 block of Elvis Presley Blvd.
Police said the children were 7 and 8 years old.
They say she's a woman of faith and they have always known her to be a very nice lady.
The issues of child abuse and endangerment have been at the forefront of the public awareness ever since 13 children were discovered shackled and held captive in a Perris, California, home last January. There was also no operable air conditioning.
Temperatures were in the mid-90's Saturday in the city.
In the video, a child is seen climbing out of the trunk of the vehicle from the kennel. "It's a huge mistake, get some help yeah but put her in jail, it's hard to say", Blake said.
An investigation has been launched by Children Services and Memphis Police.
Neighbors of Cheeks expressed their shock after learning about the incident.
Skylarr Blake, who lives a few doors down from Cheeks, said he couldn't imagine her doing such a thing.
