A raccoon ended up in a most precarious place near the top of the UBS building.

By the afternoon, it had stopped on a ledge more than 20 storeys high.

The nimble little fella climbed 23 floors - about 60m - up the UBS Tower in Saint Paul, panicking thousands of onlookers who were following the situation on Twitter.

Social media became abuzz at the news of the raccoon's plight, and users began posting videos and pictures of the furry animal.

Right now in Minnesota, a humble raccoon has taken on a lofty challenge: it's scaling a skyscraper, and we're all really anxious about it.

Many citizens posted on Twitter they were concerned for the raccoon's safety and were anxious it had not eaten since it started its journey. "We all just have to keep our fingers crossed".

The woodland creature also had its own Twitter account, with one tweet saying, 'I made a big mistake'.

The critter was first spotted at the Town Square building in St. Paul, huddled in a nook above the sidewalk.

The last update about the raccoon's journey was staff from the local fire department were trying to lure it the roof to rescue it.

The raccoon has gotten Twitter so excited that someone has even started an account on the critter's behalf: "The St. Paul Raccoon".
