Briton Thomas takes Dauphine lead as Ireland's Martin wins stage

Ireland's Dan Martin resisted a late challenge from Welsh all-rounder Geraint Thomas to clinch his first win in 16 months after a thrilling summit duel at the Criterium de Dauphine on Friday.

An 18.3km team time trial in Frauenfeld also took place today to mark the start of the Tour de Suisse, another World Tour event.

Geraint Thomas says winning the 2018 Criterium du Dauphine is the finest result of his career on the road.

Welshman Thomas accused AG2R La Mondiale of lacking decorum after he suffered a puncture on the descent of the Col des Saisies with around 40km left of the closing stage, won by fellow Brit Adam Yates of Mitchelton-Scott.

"Ive been feeling good all year", the Irishman said after the race. I can rest a little bit and wait for July. Bilbao made his move late on during the gruelling stage that is nearly the same as stage 11 in the Tour de France next month, with four major climbs and a summit finish at la Rosiere.

"Each kilometre I was more confident and happier".

"It was a hard stage, especially back to back with yesterday's, which was hard too".

"I knew I had about one minute 20 seconds to lose on Yatesy so at 200 (metres) to go, when they started sprinting for the win, I was relieved", Thomas was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Thomas's Italian Sky team-mate Gianni Moscon is third overall on the same time as Caruso.

"It's been a learning process starting in a new team so getting this win for UAE is great", he said.

French rider Romain Bardet took third in the overall standings.

For his part, Bardet denied any wrongdoing, insisting they were only riding hard to win the stage. Pierre Rolland (FRA) Team EF Education First - +41 Drapac p/b Cannondale Overall leaders 1.
