Mumbai: Congress president Rahul Gandhi will appear before a court in the adjoining Thane district on Tuesday in connection with a defamation case filed against him by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker. This comes days after former President and senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee attended an RSS event in Nagpur.

Quoting Narayan Iyer, a criminal lawyer from Bhiwandi appearing for Rahul Gandhi, PTI reported that the court is likely to frame charges against the Congress chief in the case. During his two-day visit to Maharashtra, Rahul Gandhi is also expected to address party workers and interact with its corporators in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

Congress President visit to Mumbai on 12th June at Goregaon Exhibition Centre is clearly one of the most important initial moves for the Congress Party as the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections are just a few months away.

He said the party workers would be enrolled for the project using their basic details and confirming that those enrolling were actually Congress men. In turn, the PM will run the government for them and all benefits will go to them, the Congress president added. "Top leaders (of both the parties) can meet any time". In opposition former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi played host until the party made a decision to skip the event in 2016 and 2017. "We will not put you in a bus with a "do not disturb" board, but will hand over the keys of the bus to you". "Also, it will help us look at the problems of Mumbai at a micro level where development actually takes place", Nirupam explained.

Gandhi said the Congress has always stood by the OBC community and will continue to strive for their rights.

Nirupam, who had contested from Mumbai North, failed to retain the seat and lost to the BJP candidate by a large margin in 2014.
