YouTube Music is the music streaming side of the equation.
YouTube Music focuses on being a recommendation engine for users to discover new music.
As you'd expect from the world's biggest video site, YouTube Music has more of a focus on music video than its competitors - but at the same time, it's also created to function as a pure audio service when the user desires.
YouTube remains the biggest video site on the internet, with over 1.8 billion accounts watching each month.
Existing YouTube Red members will be able to access YouTube Premium with no price increase.
YouTube Premium will include YouTube Music with background listening anddownloads and more original series and movies.
"YouTube is unlikely to become the leading music subscription service soon, but there is no denying that it has clearly upped its game", Mulligan said in a blog post Thursday. The app is free, however, it contains some ads, but there is also an advertisement-free version that contains some more features.
Whether or not YouTube Music will launch in South Africa has yet to be announced.
Updated on May 17: Added additional information about YouTube Premium pricing, content, and future availability. "YouTube Red is a service that is really a music service", she said, adding that exclusive shows are added on top of that service.
Music-streaming companies have long had strained relations with music labels, facing accusations that they don't fairly compensate artists for their creative work and for encouraging audiences to pilfer music.
It's unclear, however, how YouTube can cut through a crowded field. Reportedly launching on May 22, it's the company's latest effort to catch up to rivals Spotify and Apple Music. YouTube Music is also charging just as much as Spotify and Apple Music, $9.99 (roughly Rs. 680).
In countries where YouTube Red is now available, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and South Korea, you can still sign up for YouTube Red at the current $10 (U.S.) subscription price - just act before May 22. It will roll out to more countries in the following weeks.
