Now, he and the New York Mets are opting to play it safe. Manager Mickey Callaway says NY hoped Cespedes could heal while playing, but the problem persisted.

New York Mets left fielder Yoenis Cespedes has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, with a strained right hip flexor.

Manager Mickey Callaway said he would only use Cespedes as a pinch hitter on Tuesday if the game was on the line.

Callaway said the decision was made last night, which would make sense considering Evans was scratched from the Las Vegas 51s lineup. "So let's take a different route".

The outfielder suffered the injury May 6 against the Colorado Rockies. In 2016, he dealt with a quad injury, and last season he was limited to 81 games with hamstring injuries. He'll aim to return when first eligible next Thursday. He could have continued to gut it out, continue to play.

In 37 games this season, Cespedes, who has battled several leg injuries the past couple of seasons, is batting.255 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs.

"He was doing everything we asked of him, not only in the offseason, but in-season", Callaway said. His preparation and the way he went about his business is definitely not the reason this happened. The infielder opened the year with the team and had three at-bats before being sent down in which he went 0-3 with a strikeout.
