Senate Panel Releases Interview Transcripts With Trump Jr

Trump Jr. says he can't recall discussing Russia investigation with father

Don Jr: I Didn't Tell My Dad About Trump Tower Meeting In Advance

In January, Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley said he planned to release the transcripts because the committee's interviews connected to the Trump Tower meetings had wrapped up.

Democrats on the committee have raised the possibility that father and son could have discussed the proposed meeting while Trump Jr. was in the midst of arranging it with Russian pop star Emin Agalarov and his British publicist, Rob Goldstone.

Trump Jr. testified that he could not recall who he spoke with, or whether his father used a blocked number.

"I didn't think that listening to someone with information relevant to the fitness and character of a presidential candidate would be an issue, no". The committee on Wednesday released more than 1,800 pages of transcripts of interviews with Trump's son and others who met with a Russian attorney at Trump Tower ahead of the 2016 election.

The meeting is under scrutiny in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation. The documents contain a record of closed-door committee interviews with five of the eight meeting attendees, including Trump Jr., Goldstone, Russian-American lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin, translator Anatoli Samochornov and Ike Kaveladze, a Russian with ties to oligarch Aras Agalarov. Without interviews of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, adviser Jared Kushner and others, Democrats say "much of the truth remains hidden".

The committee released more than 1,800 pages of transcripts of interviews previous year with Trump's son and others who met with a Russian attorney at Trump Tower ahead of the 2016 election. But the committee released a short page of notes Manafort took on his phone during the meeting. But the participants have said Veselnitskaya did not in fact provide dirt on Clinton, instead focusing on overturning the U.S. sanctions on Russia under the Magnitsky Act that the USA passed to punish Russian human rights abuses.

And CNN K-File reporter Andrew Kaczynski flagged a portion of Trump Jr.'s testimony in which he claimed that his email saying that he'd "love" dirt on Hillary Clinton, "especially later in the summer", were meant as a brush off of sorts.

Mr Mueller has brought several unrelated charges against Mr Manafort, including money-laundering conspiracy, false statements and acting as an unregistered foreign agent related to Ukrainian political work. The Trump Tower meeting, and the administration's initial response to reports of it, has been one focus of the probe.

Notably, according to the AP, Trump Jr. The emails also show he accepted the meeting despite it being described as part of a Russian government effort to aid his father's campaign.
