Riverview man charged with DUI in double fatal crash

The crash closed USA 301 for about seven hours, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Two people on a motorcycle are dead and the driver of a Lexus is facing DUI manslaughter charges after a crash on USA 301 Saturday night in Riverview.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on USA 301 at Johanna Avenue in Riverview.

The driver of the motorcycle, Kerry Webb, 37, was pronounced dead on scene.

Troopers said Ben Johnston was driving a Lexus southbound on U.S. 301 when he turned left onto Johanna Avenue and traveled into the path of motorcycle traveling northbound on United States 301.

Benson Craig Johnston, of Riverview, was charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter, two counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, and felony DUI (third offense). Johnston turned left into the path of a 2013 Suzuki GSX-R750 being driven by Mr. Webb north on US 301 in the center lane. Johnston tried to turn left onto Johanna Avenue as the motorcycle entered the intersection, and the vehicles collided.

Johnston fled the crash on foot, troopers reported, and went to his home on the 10800 block of Lake St. Charles Boulevard.

Hillsborough County Sheriffs deputies found him there and brought him back to the accident scene, where he was arrested.

The crash closed the roadways until about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
