Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Chinese President Xi Jinping on his re-election and said that he looks forward to working with him to improve the bilateral relationship between the two nations. Xi's reappointment by the Communist Party-controlled legislature was a foregone conclusion, but all eyes had been on whether his former anti-corruption enforcer, Wang Qishan, would become his deputy.

National People's Congress delegates voted 2,964 to 2 to approve Li's appointment.

He was also selected as the chairman of the Central Military Commission.

"Really no one is going to shout and moan too much" because growth and stability are considered so important, Brown said Friday in a talk to foreign media in Beijing.

Before his formal assumption of power in 2012 as the party's general secretary, he served five years as heir apparent, during which time he evidently planned the moves he would make to consolidate his power, including the anti-corruption campaign and One Belt, One Road.

Xi's face dominated the front pages of major Sunday newspapers, many carrying the same editorial from the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily using language once more associated with Mao Zedong to say he was a "leader loved and respected by the people" and "helmsman of the country". Mr Wang, reportedly a friend of Mr Xi's from their youth, led the charge - becoming a feared enforcer for the Xi administration.

"Xi's dominance has been achieved through top-down measures, such as tightened discipline and the anti-graft drive, as well as skillful politics, rather than the winning of hearts and minds", said Tom Rafferty, the Economist Intelligence Unit regional manager for China "That points to a potential fragility, but we do not expect any challenge to his position to emerge in the coming years".

The way Wang was presented on state TV during his swearing-in ceremony, India Today reporter Ananth Krishnan noted, essentially confirms that he is the "8th Politburo Standing Committee member for all intents and purposes".
