UP, Bihar bypoll results: BJP trails in Adityanath's Gorakhpur, other key seats

Yogi Adityanath represented Gorakhpur for five consecutive terms in the Lok Sabha.

District Magistrate Rajeev Rautela reportedly walked into the counting centre and stopped personnel from giving updates to the media.

The Samajwadi Party has slipped into the lead as votes are counted in by-elections for Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur parliament seat, where a top official has barred the media from entering the counting centre in what is now a full-blown political controversy.

Initially, during the counting of the postal ballots, Kaushlendra Singh Patel of the BJP was leading, but after 10 a.m.as counting pace picked up, the Samajwadi Party candidate made a lead.

In Bihar, the BJP is leading in Bhabua assembly constituency by about 2,500 votes - a seat that is already held by it.

BJP's candidate from Phulpur Kaushlendra Singh Patel spoke to the media and said that early trends do not mean much.

In the state's assembly by-poll, the BJP is leading by 13,636 votes in Bhabua followed by the Congress with 11,108 votes, and the RJD has marked a clear lead in Jehanabad with 21,487 as JDU comes in second with 12,588 votes. BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla is second with 43,456 votes. In Uttar Pradesh, the BSP is supporting the SP candidates in the two Lok Sabha seats while Congress, which contested the 2017 assembly poll with Samajwadi Party, had fielded its own candidates. In the prestigious Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat, the home turf of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla was trailing behind Praveen Nishad of the SP by over 1,500 votes at the end of third round of counting.

Bihar bypolls are being seen as a litmus test for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after he pulled out of the state's Grand Alliance and joined the BJP. BJP got 82811 votes.

Snags in the electronic voting machines (EVMs) were reported from some places.

On the other hand, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav had said it (polling day) was a day to "change and re-write history".
