A man sought for questioning in NY in the killing of a university nursing student has been detained in Nicaragua, authorities in the Central American nation said Tuesday.
Anderson, a nursing student at the State University of NY at Binghamton, was from Westbury, Long Island.
Police believe Tercero left the USA out of New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport the same morning Anderson's body was found. They were both nursing students at BU and had a previous relationship.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Haley Anderson's roommate said she found her friend's body in Tercero's bed on Friday after she went searching for her.
Nicaraguan authorities told WABC-TV that Tercero had been detained and transferred to a prison in El Chipote, 40 miles southwest of the capitol, Managua. Anderson's death was ruled a homicide, but police haven't said how or why she was killed. "Then we put two and two together quickly".
But if Tercero has dual citizenship in the US and Nicaragua, the situation then becomes more complicated. Nicaragua's Canal 4 showed an image of a Nicaraguan passport with his name and photo. Nicaraguan news outlets refer to Tercero as an American national.
It is not known if Tercero has retained an attorney.
In 2013 Nicaragua did agree to extradite Eric Justin Toth, who was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted for child pornography, but in that case Toth was not a citizen of the country.
