A charter passenger bus carrying high band school students from Texas crashed Tuesday morning on Interstate 10 at mile marker 57 near the Alabama/Florida line.
According to Loxley Police, I-10 eastbound is shut down because a tour bus has fallen off a ravine.
The bus was carrying at least 52 people, WEAR-TV reports.
Elliot said that the wounded were transported to three hospitals in Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida, as well as a free-standing emergency room in Baldwin County.
An Alabama state trooper tells the Associated Press that the driver was killed in the crash.
The crash and rescue effort closed down Interstate 10 in both directions near the Florida state line.
Major Anthony Lowery with Baldwin County Sheriff's Office told WKRG multiple helicopters are responding to the accident.
Authorities in Alabama say a charter tour bus carrying students on a school trip from Houston, Texas, has plunged into a ravine, with multiple injuries reported.
The injured passengers, including one listed in critical condition and five in serious condition, were taken by helicopter or ambulance to 10 hospitals in Alabama and Florida, Mack said.
Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola confirmed on its website that it had received 18 patients from the bus wreck on Tuesday.
Lowery said uninjured passengers will be reunited with family members and Channelview school officials at Coastal Church on County Road 64 in Daphne, Alabama.
"Everybody is being transferred to a hospital to at least be checked out", said Elliott.
An image of the wreckage shows the crumpled bus landed on its side below the highway. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted, "Please join Cecilia & me in prayer and support for the Channelview students harmed by this bus crash".
Mark Kramer, a spokesman for Channelview Independent School District in unincorporated Harris County, Texas, said, "A charter bus transporting Channelview High School band students was involved in an accident on Interstate 10 in Alabama early this morning". He also said officials from the National Transportation Safety Board were on their way to the crash scene.
