"The business is the business", he said.
It is an age-old cliche.
The Kings acquired veteran defenseman Dion Phaneuf in a four-player trade with the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night. The team supposedly refocused in the offseason, and the real Blackhawks were going to show up this season.
On the surface, the swap might seem like a head-scratcher, especially since Gaborik has missed more than one-third of his games over the past five seasons. The deal gives the Kings more depth on the blue line as they assume the final three-plus years of Phaneuf's contract.
Meanwhile, the Senators go into a full-on re-tool, while they continue to clear salary cap space and financial commitments.
Smith has been linked to the Calgary Flames, but several National Hockey League teams are looking for a forward or two, including the New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers, Winnipeg Jets, St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks. "Like, literally underwrite. Write a cheque. I am honored to be going there, I am excited about the team they have, where they are in the standings, I am going to go there and do the best I can to help their team".
"Everybody knew what was happening, there was no need to address it", said Boucher. Ottawa will not only eat $5.25 million of the $21 million owed to Dion Phaneuf over the next three years, but pick up Gaborik's contract.
This season, 33-year-old Phaneuf is an alternate captain for the Ottawa Senators. In return for these players, the Kings are sending Marian Gaborik and Nick Shore to Canada's capital. The last time Phaneuf switched teams, he was traded mid-season from the Leafs to the Senators in February 2016. Ottawa was equally as accommodating for Phaneuf as it was in moving Mike Fisher to be near his country star wife Carrie Underwood's homebase.
Phaneuf indicated that the move to California would be beneficial for him and his wife, actress Elisha Cuthbert. Phaneuf would likely slot into a top-four defensive role in Los Angeles if this becomes official. As one of the teams at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, look for Ottawa to make other trades going forward.
"To be honest with you, I want to thank the Ottawa Senators organization for my time with them, first and foremost, I have nothing but great things to say about the city of Ottawa, about the organization, about my time here", he said. It's obviously a tough day for a lot of the guys in this room. Two guys I have been far in the playoffs with. He may get another crack now. Two players that I really respect.
On the ice and on the scoreboard it was just another night at the office for the 2017-18 Ottawa Senators as they were on the wrong end of a 6-3 decision in Pittsburgh. "You just try to come to the rink and play the best you can". You want to have success, you want to go on those runs, you want to have a chance. The teams announced the trade Tuesday night after the Senators' loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, in which Phaneuf was pulled from the bench mid-game. There is more money to move out. Centre Derick Brassard will soon join the mix. Defencemen and centres are at a premium, but Phaneuf was ranked 39th on the board because of his contract.
Before getting into the players first we must talk about the true goal of this trade, shedding salary. That is as big a win as any on the trade front. "He's a good friend of mine and a good friend of everybody on this team".
