The North American International Auto Show, which runs until 28 January, is a key event in the global vehicle calendar. It has 270 horsepower, makes 429 pound-feet of torque and produces 50 percent less emissions than current engines on the market. Big pickup truck sales rose nearly 6 per cent previous year to almost 2.4 million, even though total United States auto sales dropped 2 per cent.

As unbelievable as these announcements are, none of them are even necessary to meet the vehicle greenhouse gas standards that EPA finalized in 2012 and affirmed a year ago. And automakers aren't giving up on the auto nameplates they worked so hard to establish.

"You can really get in and think luxury, especially because we have provided first class seating for anybody who is in the vehicle whether it is first row, second row, or third", says Lincoln SUV Marketing Manager Megan McKenzie. "There are just real vehicles". The front has more chrome and standard LED lighting to finish the look.

One of the new variations will be the LT Trailboss aimed at off-roaders.

The new Veloster will be available in two different engines. It's still powered by a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a choice of a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

The auto "represents an even more compelling offering for young and young-at-heart automotive enthusiasts", said Mike O'Brien, vice president of planning for Hyundai Motor America. There are so many things to check out.

Despite the changes, the new Jetta is born into the world facing an uphill battle. Compare that to vehicle sales, which dropped almost 11 percent. The starting price is $900.

Designers gave the new model a "coupe-like exterior" with a quickly sloping roofline. The German automaker says the 2019 Jetta is longer, wider and taller than previous models.

During the show's opening Sunday at Cobo Center, U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao told attendees the federal government would introduce new federal autonomous guidelines this summer in an effort to modernize regulations for autonomous cars.

The Forte grows larger but becomes more fuel-efficient. The company shuttered the 86-year-old Minnesota factory where the Ranger was made.

Honda sold 322,655 Accords in the U.S.in 2017, a 6.5 per cent decline over the previous year.

Toyota Avalon, the brand's full-size auto, gets nicer all around. BMW also says it can travel up to 18 miles on electric power alone.

Differences between the grades are clear. The integrated dual exhaust and the tires of up to 33 inches in diameter are also notable features. "And that way, the deployment and the roll out of these technologies is much more controlled".

This year's Detroit Auto Show has unfolded with the slick precision of a corporate infomercial, filled with sparkly new offerings, but little of the crackle of something truly innovative. It is the first vehicle to feature the system.

Designers couldn't leave the taillights alone either.
