Vikas Barala gets bail in Chandigarh stalking case

Chandigarh stalking case Vikas Barala Varnika Kundu

Vikas Barala had allegedly stalked and attempted to kidnap Chandigarh-based DJ Varnika Kundu

In December, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had deferred a hearing on Vikas Barala's bail plea to today. Despite the growing calls for Subhash Barala's ouster from the party, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar maintained that Haryana's BJP president will not punished for his son's wrongdoing. His lawyer had moved the high court for regular bail in November after a local court denied him bail for the fourth time.

"No application was filed on behalf of the prosecution alleging that the accused had made any attempt to influence anybody", said Vinod Ghai, the counsel for Vikas.

He said that the defence told the court that the accused would not influence anybody in the case.

His petition for bail had been dismissed four times by a trial court.

Vikas has been confined in Chandigarh's Burail jail since August 9, 2017.

Speaking to NDTV in August past year, Ms Kundu had said she would like to see a change in the status of women in India.

However, Kundu rejected the arguments, pointed out various technical errors in the call detail records.

Citing her harrowing experience on the fateful night when she was allegedly stalked by Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar, Varnika stood by her allegations and reiterated the entire sequence of events in the court.

Her father, Virender Kundu, is a senior officer with the Haryana government.

The two men were arrested on the intervening night of August 4-5 a year ago following the complaint, but were released on bail as they were booked under bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.
